About Me

I’m an expert on manufacturing, supply chains, technological change, and organizations. I’m also a U.S. Geological Survey and Department of Energy alum. I’ve been working on critical minerals and advanced materials for almost a decade, and have been making firm-level data-sets for just as long.

More specifically, much of that time has been spent on furthering R&D and commercialization for energy and transportation technologies, as well as shaping markets and industries for adoption and deployment. Whether it’s SBIR awards, prizes, tax credits, loans, and grants; or, diplomacy, trade, procurement, and public data and analysis; I’ve gotten lucky to develop and leverage numerous financing methods and policy tools.

I’m a bit of a mix of engineer, sociologist, and policy wonk.

This site was built on the amazing work of many open-source developers.1 Special thanks goes to Dr. John Helveston and his US Vehicle Trends Dashboard2, which served as the foundation for developing this website, and is an even better example of making data and analysis interesting, accessible, and digestible. See more amazing work by John here.

Many thanks, too, to the various data sources which are cited, including the many journalists who make work like this possible, and to departments and agencies and their staff for publishing open data.

And finally, to my former USG critical mineral colleagues who continue to do great work inside and outside of government.
